Hi, Alex Carroll here ?

While I know quite a bit about speed detection and the various detectors and jammers on the market, I always leave the final word to Carl Fors and Speedlabs. Carl is unquestionably the world's leading expert on speed measurement and detection. Because Carl is not a manufacturer or reseller of either detectors or speed guns, he is able to test their performance without bias. Cops hire him to test their guns against the detectors, and detector manufacturers hire him to test their equipment against the speed guns.

Magazines from both sides of the fence, including Car & Driver and Law Enforcement Technology, look to Carl for his advice and comprehensive tests.

When I want the real story, and not fluff from the manufacturers, I turn to Carl. His recommendations are my recommendations, and the only detectors and jammers you'll ever find offered on this site will be among Carl's top picks. If you'd like to read more about Carl's testing procedures, as well as look at a detailed comparison of each unit's features, visit www.speedzones.com

Here's Carl's top picks this year:

Carl's Comments ...

"Best immediacy of response to instant-on radar. Superb front and rear radar range. Aggressive, insistent reporting! Fierce detection."

My Comments ?

The Bel 985 is a great detector. It's only competitor is the Passport 8500, but for the same price, it also offers adjustable volume and a voice alert feature. These are really nice if you are blasting your stereo or don't want to annoy your girlfriend.

Carl's Comments ...

?The Blinder is the most effective laser countermeasure ever evaluated by Speed Measurement Laboratories, Inc. (SML).... It successfully jammed every laser gun, every time, in every targeting circumstance, from every distance. The Blinder completely jammed laser guns from the point of targeting continually to the laser gun's location....?

.

My Comments ?

If you drive in an area where they use laser a lot, you simply must have a Blinder. They are amazing.

Carl's Comments ...

?Considering concealed, custom mounting, laser cloaking, and front/rear protection? The K40 Undetectable is the pick here!?

.

My Comments ?

I love remote detectors? neither cops nor thieves can spot them. And the K40 is the only one that doesn?t have an in dash console with a bunch of extra lights.

It requires custom installation and a significantly higher investment than other units ? but you really should consider it.

Other things to think about when considering a detector/jammer purchase:
..
Radar detectors will not save you every time. They rely on picking up some of the scattered beam when the cop clocks someone else. If you?re the only car on the road and the cop turns on his gun just to clock you ? you don?t get a warning ? you get nailed.
.
On the other hand, a good detector like the "Bel 985" can warn you of approaching radar 2 miles in advance. That gives you plenty of time to adjust your speed.
.
Detectors are illegal in Washington D.C., Virginia and all Canadian provinces except Alberta and British Columbia.
.
1 in 5 dash mounted (portable) detectors are stolen every year
.
Permanent remote mounted units are virtually impossible to spot (when properly installed) ? much less steal. These are the ones like the "K40 Undetectable" where the antenna is separate from the receiver.
.
The laser detector feature on most models is meaningless. Hell will freeze over before you get an early warning from a laser detector. Laser beams don't scatter like radar's do. Which means that when it goes off, you're already toast.
.
If you want to escape laser, you'll need a laser jammer. The "Blinder" is definitely the most effective model on the market. They are illegal in a few states ? check the laws.
.
Of the quarter million speed guns in America, only 5% are laser ? and nearly half of those are in Ohio.
.
The rest are comprised of the 3 bands of police radar: 50% -- K band; 35% -- Ka band; and 10% -- X band.
.
X band is the one shared by burglar alarms and garage door openers. It causes all the false alerts that detectors give. It's usage by police is dwindling and many new detectors allow you to turn it off entirely so you don't have to listen to the chatter anymore.
.
DO NOT buy a radar jammer. It is a FELONY to jam or attempt to jam police radar. Conviction could lead to a $75,000 fine and a year in prison. The ones that work are illegal. The ones that claim "passive jamming" with an "FM chirp" have NEVER passed a Speedlabs test. I wouldn't waste my money.
